CISCO has, and is,amongst the world’s leading network hardware manufacturers ever since the beginnings, and has grown to become one of the most renowned network-related companies worldwide. Besides providing network hardware and network security solutions and services, CISCO also provides training and certifications at all levels for network professionals and technicians.
The CCNA, or Cisco Certified Network Associate, is an associate-level certification issued by CISCO to identify apt individuals that are capable of working in a network-related job. The exam has advanced throughout the years to better comply with the evolving needs of the market, and as of now, candidates must only pass 2 exams in order to achieve advanced technology certifications in an accelerated manner.
A networking certification will be valuable, of course for people wishing to enter a networking career. While lower level certifications do not provide much opportunities, the CCNA might help you get rid, as an associate-level certification, of some “Junior” prefixes to your job title and work for titles alike:
- Network administrators;
- Network Architects;
- Network Security administrators;
- Network Designers
- Network Builders;
- Network Data Center engineers;
- IT Network Consultants;
- Collaboration Architects;
- Video/Voice Network Managers;
- Wireless Technicians;
The skills required for each certification will vary, of course, depending on the specialization. For example, for the CCNA Security, knowledge of the latest and best CISCO Security Systems will be required, amongst other things. However, all CCNA certifications will expect you to have a set of skills that are common amongst any networking personnel at the associate level.Some of those skills are:
- Basic Routing and Switching (The CCNA exam for the same domain will require more);
- Intermediate Troubleshooting skills;
- Basic Network Operation skills;
- Some Network Security (CCNA Security the needs may be greater);
- Practical knowledge in setting up and running a basic network;
Current CISCO CCNA pathways include:
- CCNA Data Center,
- CCNA Routing and Switching,
- CCNA Security,
- CCNA Service Provider,
- CCNA Service Provider Operations,
- CCNA Video,
- CCNA Voice,
- CCNA Wireless
As this is an associate-level certification there is no formal pre-requirement for taking the exam for getting the certifications at the CCNA level. This may be because the only lower level certification available is the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) that only requires one exam. While the CCENT is called the first step to receiving the CCNA, the skills verified in the CCENT involve only the installing and setting up of small local networks, covering only fundamentals. As such, the certification itself (the CCENT one) isn’t worth that much and is usually not worth spending time and money to get it, and technicians usually just get a CCNA directly, although it does help.
As said above, after new modifications to the structure of the CCNA exam, candidates must now pass only two exams. Most of the time, when there are more than 2 exams available, the candidate is given the right to choose which he would like to take.
The exams themselves can be up to 90 minutes long, encompassing between 55 and 65 questions. It can be taken either in English or Japanese, and is available to take in multiple centers worldwide. Registrations for exams are usually made through Pearson VUE.
While there are no required courses to be eligible to take the certification, CISCO does provide a wide range of training for every CCNA domain. You can sigh-up for training in one of many CISCO accredited courses from the CISCO main site. However CISCO training courses are notorious for being expensive, so expect a budget cut of about $2,000 if you decide to take it.
There usually are two or more exams available for each domain, from which at least two are required to pass the certification. Some however, such as the CCNA Security only have 1 exam that needs to be passed. Information on which exams are associated to which certification is available on the exam main page.
The exam itself costs around $125, but costs tend to grow bigger with the buying of textbooks, guide books, and especially lab equipment. However, even if you are generous with the preparation spending, it shouldn’t reach higher than $1,000 unless you were ripped off or something like that of course.
Besides the training courses, there are quite a lot of training materials and self-preparation books and resources available to buy. Most people that try for the CCNA usually build a mini-lab for themselves in which to practice and experiment with CISCO equipment in order to be better able to take the exam. 1st party books usually start at around $30, going up, and sometimes over $100. So be sure to pay attention on how much you spend first.
